Rick Lee of Lee’s Flower Shop
Life without limitations - The story of Charles Owens
Richard "Rick" Lee, born to founders William and Winnifred Lee, represents the second generation of Lee’s Flower and Card Shop, a family-owned florist on Washington, D.C.’s historic U Street since 1945. Established in the vibrant “Black Broadway” era, the shop thrived as a community cornerstone, enduring challenges like the 1968 riots and 2020’s COVID-19 lockdown. Rick took over from his parents, who met when William, a Pullman Porter, wooed Winnifred in Montreal before settling in D.C. He ran the business for 40 years, steering it through U Street’s transformation, until retiring in 2012. That year, his daughters, Stacie Lee Banks and Kristie Lee Jones, the third generation, bought the shop, preserving its legacy as D.C.’s oldest Black-owned flower business. Rick’s tenure bridged tradition and change, sustaining a floral heritage now in its 80th year.
