Teacher Spotlight: Kenny Elliott
Kenny Elliott began drumming at age 9, studying at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago with percussionists James Dutton and Harold Jones. He joined the Musicians Union at 12 and gigged professionally, touring at 13 with Dutton’s Rosewood Rebellion. Mentored by Red Saunders and King Kolax, he played jazz, R&B, rock, and theater at Chicago’s Regal Theatre, later teaching at the Conservatory. As a Brunswick Records staff drummer, he recorded with Walter Jackson and Syl Johnson. After moving to Los Angeles in 1977, he joined Local 47, working with Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Benny Maupin, and Jobete Music, recording for Syreeta Wright, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and others. Elliott’s career spanned TV, concerts, and tours with icons like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Natalie Cole. He passed away on February 23, 2024, leaving a lasting musical legacy.
